Swirl marks are thousands of fine scratches in the clear coat that scatter light in every direction. On black and dark grey vehicles they read as a dull grey haze. Correction levels the clear coat around those scratches so light reflects cleanly again.

Enhancement work is often a full day. Multi-stage correction on a larger vehicle can take two days or more.
